The Department for Education - behaviour hubs

The Alternative Provision Reference Group & Government Behaviour Advisor roles

In 2019, Marie was recruited by the Department for Education to become a Government Behaviour Advisor, following an announcement from the Secretary of State for Education to improve behaviour in schools by supporting them to share good practice and knowledge on behaviour management. Marie is one of five behaviour advisers to shape and run the behaviour support programme nationally.

The Department for Education - Specialist Leaders of Education

Specialist Leaders of Education (SLEs)

In March 2020, Marie was appointed as the DfE’s Specialist Leaders of Education (SLE) following a rigorous application process.

SLEs are outstanding middle and senior leaders who have the skills to support individuals or teams in similar positions in other schools. They understand what outstanding leadership practice in their area of expertise looks like and are skilled in helping other leaders to achieve it in their own context. SLEs can develop the leadership capacity of others, using coaching or facilitation support that draws on their knowledge and expertise.

teach first

Collaboration

Marie has delivered talks for Teach First and has delivered successful ‘Behaviour as Communication, Attachment and Trauma’ training sessions to Teach First Students at the Summer Institute in Leeds. Following the huge success of these sessions, the ECT training was devised, opening opportunities for Early Career Teachers and those professionals in the first years of their teaching carer to attend training focused on building crucial skills to support and manage behaviour.

The solihull approach

In August 2020, Marie completed the Solihull Train the Trainer training programme.

The Solihull Approach aims to increase emotional health and well-being through both practitioners and parents. It does this through resources and training across the child and family workforce. The majority of health visitors in the UK are now trained in the Solihull Approach model. Many child and family practitioners from midwives to social workers have been trained in the model. Whole schools have been trained. Some police, firefighters and adult mental health professionals have also been trained.

The Solihull Approach can be used for early intervention and prevention in the early years, as well as across childhood and into adulthood. It provides a theoretical framework for working with emotional and behaviour difficulties and provides supporting evidence e.g. for Ofsted. It is also included in the UK Department of Health’s Healthy Child Programme.

Marie will continue to use the Solihull Approach and support programmes to increase skills and knowledge, consistency and shared language across parents and professionals.
